“You were on fire today bud, what were you thinking about? Where was your focus?” I asked my oldest son, after he had gone 3 for 3 at the plate.
“Nothing actually. Just hit ball. Other than that, all I could do was concentrate on my breathing. It was really annoying.” He replied.
Wait. What? Was a nonchalant question to help him reflect on how things came together unlocking the teachable moment of a lifetime?
“Dude, you do realize that was ‘the zone’ you were in, right?” My husband and I spit out almost in unison both in awe at his response.
“Yea, but it’s hard having to focus on breathing. Shouldn’t it happen without thinking about it?”
Touché young padawan. It should. But people pay really good money to get taught how to focus on just that annoying thing. It’s so hard to do. But, being able to wipe everything from your mind other than the thing you are trying to do is a super power.
I’m not sure if he will be able to consistently access ‘the zone’ when he needs it, but having been to the top of the mountain, at least he knows what it feels like. What about you dear reader, have you ever truly gotten into ‘the zone’? Did it feel different to you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
